Personal Protection in the Home

Cost $175- Course 12 Hours (Includes Range Fee) 

Prerequisites - NRA Basic Firearms Class Participants in the Personal Protection course should be experienced shooters, showing mastery of the basic skills of safe gun handling. If necessary, this course will put participants through a pre-course evaluation exercise, where potential students are asked to demonstrate safe gun handling, shoot a series of five-shot groups, discuss the operations necessary to zero a pistol, and demonstrate how to properly clean a handgun.


Course Goal:

To develop in the students the basic knowledge, skills, and attitude essential to the safe and efficient use of a handgun for protection of self and family, and to provide information on the law-abiding citizen's right to self-defense. Unlike the other basic courses, the Personal Protection course covers defensive shooting. Self-defense is a topic somewhat distinct from the regular diet of shooting fundamentals, it can cover mindset, legal issues, decision-making under pressure, and planning for the worst. The Basic Personal Protection in the Home course is designed around the use of the defensive pistol. Students will receive the NRA Guide to the Basics of Personal Protection in the Home handbook and intensive lessons on basics of defensive shooting, issues of self-defense, and other strategies for protecting the home and family. Lessons Introduction to Defensive Shooting Basic Defensive Handgun Skills Firearms and the Law: Possession, Ownership, and the Use of Deadly Force Strategies for Home Safety and Responding to a Violent Confrontation Selecting a Handgun for Personal Defense Course Review and Examination


What the Student Needs to Bring to Class

A handgun in good working order.

Recommended are either double action revolvers or semi-automatics

(2) speed loaders for revolvers or minimum

(2) magazines for semi-autos.

Spare magazine or speed loader pouch.

(200-300) rounds of Ammo.

Waistband holsters must allow for safe & easy one handed re-holstering.

Waistband holsters must be secured by means of a belt

Ear & Eye Protection. 

Note pad & pen/pencil.

Personal Protection Outside the Home COST - $225 Course - 16 Hours (Includes Range Fee) 

16 Hours This course also meets the CCW requirements for Tulare County, Kings County, Fresno County, City of Fresno, City of Lemoore, and City of Hanford


Prerequisites - NRA Basic Firearms Class, NRA Personal Protection In the Home Participants in the Personal Protection course should be experienced shooters, showing mastery of the basic skills of safe gun handling. If necessary, this course will put participants through a pre-course evaluation exercise, where potential students are asked to demonstrate safe gun handling, shoot a series of five-shot groups, discuss the operations necessary to zero a pistol, and demonstrate how to properly clean a handgun. This course is ideal for individuals who have a concealed carry permit and want to develop the skills and experience necessary to safely and effectively carry a handgun for self-defense. The course teaches safe and effective means of carrying a concealed handgun. Safe and effective means of drawing a handgun from concealment. Shooting skills including, moving to cover, use of cover and concealment, sitting to standing, turning, low-light, dealing with common firearm stoppages and malfunctions, etc.

Concealment Garment (vest, jacket, sports coat, etc.)

Either Strong side, outside the waistband holster or holster purse.

Holster must securely hold the gun.

Waistband holsters must allow for safe & easy one handed re-holstering.

Waistband holsters must be secured by means of a belt

Note pad & pen/pencil.

Course Information NRA Basic Pistol Shooting Course Goal: "To teach the basic knowledge, skills and attitude for owning and using a pistol safely" 
More Details: This course is approximately 8-hours long in length The course is divided into two parts: classroom instructional period and a range session. Students learn NRA’s rules for safe gun handling; pistol parts and operation; ammunition; shooting fundamentals; range rules; shooting from the bench rest position, and two handed standing positions; cleaning the pistol; and continued opportunities for skill development. Students will receive the NRA Guide to the Basics of Pistol Shooting handbook, NRA Gun Safety Rules brochure, Winchester/NRA Marksmanship Qualification booklet; take a Basics of Pistol Shooting Student Examination and receive a course completion certificate.
